How to Safeguard Your Septic System During Winter

1. Inspect the Lid Regularly

A compromised lid can severely damage your tank because the heat trapped inside your septic system will escape, leaving it susceptible to freezing if temperatures dip. A frozen tank can cause the drains in your home to stop working, leaving your plumbing unusable. In extreme cases, it can even result in sewage backups. However, you can periodically check the lid to ensure there are no cracks. Frequent inspections let you catch minor issues and cracks early before they worsen.

2. Provide Insulation

Anything that helps the ground retain warmth will help protect your system. Adding a layer of mulch or relying on compact groundcovers with shallow root systems provides an excellent insulator over your tank and drain field. However, keep in mind that trees or hardwood plants may not be a good idea. This is because their roots can penetrate and damage the system, leading to ineffective wastewater treatment.

3. Avoid Snow Compaction

While North Carolina doesn't receive an abundance of snow, even a couple of inches can be a good insulator for the tank and its connecting pipes, but only if it's not compacted. When snow is compacted, a layer of ice forms beneath it, obstructing the passage of air and water through the soil. This inhibits the proper filtration of wastewater and could freeze the system. If you get snow this winter, avoid walking on the area directly over your tank and drain field to prevent compaction.

4. Get Your Pipes Winterized

It's always a good idea to winterize your system if you plan to be away from home for a lengthy period. You can start by having your tank pumped before the first frost. Then, you can close the water main and open the taps to drain the water from the pipes. After that, disconnecting your washing machine, dishwasher, or other linked appliances will drain them as well.

Lastly, you can add a septic-safe antifreeze once the tank’s pressure is emptied. Following these steps before a long vacation or visit with relatives safeguards your system in the event of inclement weather.
